MANY COMING TO LATONIA
KENTUCKY MEETING ATTRACTING HORSEMEN
FROM OTHER RACING CENTERS.
Jockey Gl&sner Falls While Riding Tritoma and Is
Carried to Hospital in Unconscious Condition —
Jockey Scoville Rides Three Winners.
Cincinnati. O.. June S.— T<Hkjr’« racing at Latonia
'vus marred |»y an accident that occurred during the
fourth race when George Glasner. riding Tritoma,
fell and was severely injured. The mishap occurred
just as tin* twelve two -year-olds making up the ticld
were scrambling for (awithuis prior to rounding the
first turn. Tritoma was then well up with the
leaders, lait made a sudden swerve and fell. In the
general mixiip that followed, many of the horses
engaged suffered. Glasner was thrown heavily and
•*ne of the horses coming from behind struck him a
sharp blow slightly al*ove the left eye. cutting a
gash nearly an inch long, lie was carried to the
jockeys* <|uarters in a semi conscious eondiliou for
preliminary treat incut and later rushed with all
s|»e«*d to a nearby liospital. At a late hour he was
still unconscious, but the doctors expressed hope
that his injury would not prove serious.
Ordinary fields again furnished the racing, but
there was a surprisingly large attendance. A liberal
sprinkling of surprises during the afternoon enabled
tliose with a penchant for playiug long-priced ones
to reap the benefit.
Aspirin was the chief surprise and paid his back-
ers at a ratio of over 41 to 1. He scored in a sen-
sational manner in the last stride over Pal. which
recently was restored to good standing by the Ken-
tucky State Pacing Commission.
Jockey Scovillc’s grod riding was a feature of the
aftennsui. The Bradley rider inaugurated a series
of successes when he landi^l Fundamental a handy
winner in the second. He followed it up by winning
with Oriental Pearl in the fourth and wound up the
day astride Third Itail in the closing dash. This
race brought out the l*est starters of the afternoon
and furnished the medium for heavy speculation.
Mulesey. which recently became the projierty of K.
S|*en«-e. showed a surprisingly improved performance
as compared with his last previous start at Louis-
ville and was pressiug the winner closely near the
end.
Don Diaz showed sudden improvement when he
c<***d i Mem to a hard drive to land the purse
in the third race.
Jockej Austin, who was injured by a fall from
John Furlong at Louisville, resumed riding today .
Wayne Joplin arrived today from Churchill Downs
ami reported that the good filly. Parkview, was not
exported to live. Sin* took siek s<n»u after her last
start and has gradually grown worse.
J. S. Hawkins arrived today from Lexington with
several horses, including Lotta Creed.
T. C. McDowell was notified today of the «ieath of
a yearling colt by Allan-a-Dale — Peg Woffington
which lie regarded highly.
P. J. Miles got in with four horses from Baltimore.
George Odom’s consignment of ten horses, includ-
ing Nimbus. My Gal and others, was shipped here
tonight from New York.
James Griffiu telegraphed that be would ship Czar
here tomorrow to join the lest of his horses now
l*eiug campaigned at ihc track.
X. K. Beal came todav with several horses that
had Imh'ii raced at Toronto.
Jockeys Koerner and Rice were each fined $25 by
the starter for disoliedience at the i>ost and for a
similar ofleuse E. Martin was susitended for three
days.
Tom Toohey. one of the disappointments of the
afternoon, ran in bandages and will 1m* required to
carry the same equipment while racing here unless
special |M*rmission is obtained from the judges to
• lis|M*nse with them.
Trainer G«*orgc Ham. who has Donau and Han-
bridge in eliarge. aunouneed today that he had
changed his plans for shipping those cracks to
Hamilton, and that lie would keep the ( J erst Hoi le
stable intact here during the Latonia meeting.
MORE RAIN AT BLUE BONNETS.
Montreal. Que.. June S. — Encouraged by bright
skies and warm sunshine, a tremendous crowd turned
• mt at Blue Bonnets this afternoon, the attendance
equaling in point of numbers that of tin* opening
day. It looked as if the rain was over, but race-
goer* were again d<*om«*d to disap|M»iutmeut. as
heavy slmwers came just as the horses were going
to the |mim in the o|M*niug dash and for a few
moments there was a perfect deluge, which turned
the track into :i veritable quagmire. There is no
chamc now of a fast track during tin* remainder of
the meeting. G<«*d sport was v.itness«*d. but form
players were a bit off in their calculations as only
two favorites won. Tlieo Cook and Parkuiglit. Both
wore at odds-un in the Istting and the Layers suf-
fered little by their victories. Several of the win-
ners. however, came in for stnnig sup|M»rt. notably
Borrower, which won the ofiening dasli backed from
lO to 4 to i. This race furnished a splendid con-
test. the first three horses finishing heads apart.
Bright Start catne from a long way back in the
second row to win in easy fashion. The running
of the favorite. Searchlight. was a keen disappoint-
ment. She showed a Hash of speed. but quit after
going a g<M*d quarter.
Tins* ( ook made a runaway affair of the third
race, making amends for his defeat in the Windsor
Hotel Cup on the n|M-nlng day of the meeting. En-
couraged by his easy victory in the Kindergarten
Stakes yesterday, owner J. W. Schorr insisted on
starting hi" filly . Plauutcss, in the fourth race.
Iiecause it looked like an easy sj*ot. IManutcss
could do no 4«elt«*r than finisli second. Eagle Bird
making a runaway affair of it and winning by a
long margin despite the fact that her rider lost
loth his siirrup irons entering the homestretch.
Bartlett Mclennan's Minto. after being left at
the [os!, managed to wear down a big gap and won
the steeplechase in easy fashion. Darkuight and
Jane Swift each wou by a g«ntd margin.
There were some dist ingiifshed visitors at Blue
Bonnets 1 1 1 i " nfteruixm. The Hoo. Lotuer Gouiu,
premier of the province of Qm*bec. ami Hon. A.
Bergevin were guests of iln* stewards ami witnessed
the running of tin* fourth race from their pagoda.
William Garth left for New York this morning to
prepare for shipment to Hamilton several two year-
olds. He will also bring to Canada II. L. Price’s
Superstition ami Everard.
CONDITIONS IN THE EAST.
Under the conditions that exist«*d at Grovescinl
la?«t week there is no doubt that any racing associa-
tion could more than |«ay expenses. It is said that
the gr«es receipts for five days were more than $•*<».-
• Mm The expenses, including stakes and purses,
amounted to atsait $2<U**(. Some <*f tin stakes,
because of excessive subscript MMis and forfeits, did
not cost the Brooklyu Jockey Club a penny. It was
rc|*ortcd \ esterdav that a new racing association
had 1 h*cii inc«»r|*or.itcd at Albany for the purfMWe of
leasing s«*veral of the h*«al tracks in case of the
retirement of some of the present turf directors.
The rumor w ill not down that an attempt will lie
made to k«*cp racing alive after Septcmlter 1. when
the new ami racing laws will become effective —

New York. June 8. — James R. Keene’s Sweep,
winner of the Belmont Stakes, added the Carlton
to his list of successes this afternoon at Gravesend
when lie leok the measure of The Turk and Dal-
matian. It was Sweep ail the way. but at the end
The Turk challenged so resolutely that jockey Pow-
ers had to hustle the tast Keene colt along to make
victory certain. The race run by The Turk repre-
sented decided improvement over Ids effort -in the
Broadway, when lie was so easily beaten by Prince
Imperial. Today he closely followed all the pace
and finished with great courage under a drive, always
holding S. C. Hildreth’s Dalmatian safe. Prince
Inqierial might as well have been in the stable.
He wln*eled and was humped at tin* start, going to
his knees. Archibald (based after his opponents
more than a dozen lengths out of it for five-eighths,
then pulled up. The race left no doubt that Sweep

President I‘. J. Dwyer of the Brooklyn Jockey

elalnirate preparation for the opening of its spring
meeting. The grandstand has iieen repainted and
the score of minor details incident to racing on the
beautiful Slieepshead Bay course are receiving tin*
attention of Superintendent Frank T. Clarke. The
mile training and main course are in excellent con-
dition. While the cushion is light, thus insuring
fast time, it is of sufficient depth to be safe.
